This letter from my grandfather Hubert Tunney to the Vicar of Thornley, the Reverend Blackwood, was discovered by Fred Bromilow in early 2006 after the closure of St Bartholomew’s Church during a general clear out which included the removal of the church’s stained glass windows. Dated January 27th 1926, just a few months before the Lock-Out and General Strike of May 1926, the letter refers to the proposed purchase of chairs by the Miners Welfare for the church. Note the headed note paper for 6 High Street, Thornley and the misspelling by the printers of Hubert as ‘Herbert’.
