HMS Laforey was an L class destroyer and was torpedoed and sunk north of Palermo, Italy by U-223. The submarine was also sunk in the engagement, which also involved several other RN ships.

A sister ship of HMS Warspite, the 32,000-ton battleship HMS Barham exploded and sank with a very heavy loss of life, after being torpedoed in the Mediterranean by U-331. Only 396 of its
