Captured with the British Expeditionary Force in France, June 1940. Called up: 1939. Held at Stalag 20B, Marienburg, in early 1945. German POW number 7257. Sunderland Echo 27/6/40: 'Mr Thomas Ashford, of Dunhelm Road, Thornley, has received official intimation that his son, Pte George E Ashford, of the 1st Bucks Regiment, is reported missing. Pte Ashford was in the Territorials before the war broke out and was working at Slough, Bucks.' Reported POW, Sunderland Echo 5/8/40.

Sunderland Echo 22/9/41: 'Mrs W Blakemore, Aged Miners' Homes, Thornley has been informed that the previous information she received to the effect that PO Blakemore was a Prisoner of War is not correct. This related to another person called Blakemore. PO Blakemore must therefore still be regarded as missing.' Photo on next page.
