Somewhat murky even in its original form, this is an old postcard view of the Hilly Owlie area of Thornley which was a beauty spot until it was filled in with pit waste in the late Fifties. Bizarrely the seats, which used to look out over the valley area were left behind and in the Sixties looked across to huge heaps of spoil! The pit would have been to the right and just off the picture. Park Street, where my mother was born at Number 20 in 1928, is just visible to the right. The large building in the centre is (I think) the Officials’ Club, which is still standing and in use.
