The photograph above is of Thornley Band forming up next to School Square on Durham Big Meeting Day in the summer of 1949. Tom Tunney is third from the left on the front row. To the left of him is Les Merryfield, who later joined the Army and became a senior figure in the Grenadier Guards Band, becoming Director of Music in the early 1970s and to his right is John Luke. The top of School Square (demolished in the early Seventies), as seen by the street sign, is to the left and St Bartholomew’s Church is to the rear. To see the same scene in 2005 click here.
