The Colliery Inn and what used to be School Square photographed in 2005. The Colliery Inn, the building at bottom left, is now a private house. Re-roofed, its distinctive crooked chimneys are long gone. The white building just above it is a commercial garage. The gentle tree-lined slope at the rear of the picture is what remains of the pit heap. As with so much of modern Thornley, the area to the right, where School Square used to be and where the bus stop now stands, is now simply an ugly grassed over area of waste land. Compare this with the photograph of the same scene in the early Fifties.
