Thornley Band Pre-war in Uniform

This photograph of Thornley Colliery Band seems to date from the inter-war years. Apart from the conductor Edward Kitto Snr, none of the players have yet been identified. A founder member and the first chairman of the Durham Brass Band League on its formation in 1940, Mr Kitto was conductor of Thornley Band for a remarkable 40-years, from 1921 to 1961. He then came out of retirement to lead the band for a further several years into the mid-1970s. Photograph courtesy of Alan Fulcher.
