My father was most amused to see this old early 1950s press photograph turning up on the cover of the 1990 book Durham Brass Band League 50 Golden Years. He’s at front right with the raised trombone. He once told me that the band wasn’t actually playing when the photo was taken. He saw the photographer and just pretended to! It does however make the shot. The black wreath on the top of the ‘Greenwood Homes’ Thornley Colliery Banner indicates that the band was marching that day to mark a fatality at the pit. Full caption of names to follow.
